My daughter graduated in '06, my son will graduate in '10. I have been (overall) very happy with HBHS, and have had timely responses from teachers about issues. My biggest complaint - hire more math teachers with above-average qualifications - Ms. Bojorquez can't do it ALL (& she is amazing!!!)

HBHS is clearly a great high school with a commitment to excellence for all students. We are committed first and foremost to academic success and have shown substantial growth on the standardized tests the past three years with special focus on teaching the underachieving students. The results have been impressive as all subgroups of students have surpassed their academic growth targets. Further, we have added significant 'intervention program' to assist at-risk students. We have added two full-time counselors and increased our school nurse from half-time to full-time. This shows tremendous commitment on behalf our our Board of Education and Superintendent. HBHS is proud of our recent accomplishments. This week we were notified by the State Superintendent, Jack O'Connell, that HBHS has been selected to be a California Distinguished School. Congratulations to our students, parents, teachers and staff! This is something for all of us to celebrate. This demonstrates comprehensive, schoolwide, effective educational programs which meet the needs of our students. I am very proud of our teachers and their commitment to excellence in instruction. We are standards-based and provide powerful learning opportunities. Last year we received a six year WASC term of accreditation due to the effectiveness of our educational programs. Our Academic Performance Index has increased for three consecutive years growing from 727 to 783. This demonstrates significant progress across the board and we know we are headed in the right direction. Further, over 90% of our students pass the California High School Exit Exam on their first attempt in tenth grade and nearly 99% pass by the end of their senior year of high school. Again, we have great news to report to you. Our athletic programs are on the rise! We have many new on-campus coaches who are available during lunch, as well as before and afterschool. We have a renewed commitment to excellence in athletics for which we are reaping great rewards. Many of our athletic teams are now making it to the post-season which results in great school pride. Finally, our Academy for the Performing Arts program is second to none! The past two years we have received more that double and tripple the number of Cappy Awards of the next successful high school. HBHS is clearly the home of the finest performing arts program in the region and county. All in all, HBHS is a great place for students and staff. We are located on a very beautiful campus undergoing modernization efforts. We are building a brand new wing of 14 high tech classrooms which will be completed in the Fall and a brand new Black Box Theatre which will be completed next summer. Our historic auditorium will be modernized this summer with new seats, sound system, lights, paint, etc. Our gymnasium is being modernized as we speak, with a new floor and new bleachers. This is a great school, with great students and staff, and our parents show their commitment to excellence everyday with their tremendous support. As you can see, I am very proud of this great high school. Dave Linzey

I love the parental involvement at Huntington Beach High School. The principal has transformed our school into a great high school where parents are welcome and where students needs are put first. The academic programs have improved significantly under the principal's leadership. We are very happy at HBHS and believe our child is receiving a great education. The emphasis upon technology is truly terrific. The new parent portal is a great tool to communicate with parents and let us know our child's progress. We wish all teachers would use this. The school is undergoing a modernization program to improve the facilities. This is very exciting. The students seem to have a lot of school spirit and appear to love their school. We are very proud of the California Distinguished School Award that HBHS is receiving this year. This shows great leadership.

Teachers demonstrate a refreshing commitment to students and scholarship. In an age of apathy, our child's teachers break the stereotype. Several teachers surprised us when they called or wrote emails simply to establish rapport and later to simply share good news about our child's progress. MUN Remains strong and provides life skills unlike nothing else. School remains under construction but is making progress. Principal has yet to write a review here even though it was brought to his attention 6 months ago AND we were disappointed he did not acknowledge or show interest in other circumstances that elevated the school's/district's exposure to risk. Experience with V.P. Guidance & Academic Counselors extremely positive. Administrative Support staff helpful and attempts to solve problems. V.P. Activities lacking in ADULT communication skills (including 'listening' skills workshop)as well as follow through/promises/commitments. Strong Communications skills & demonstrated accountability are two key elements integral to effective leadership.

This classic two-story school has a lot of history and is going through a major facelift in it's 100th anniversary. Though it may seem like a laid back, beach-bum atmosphere, it takes it's academics very seriously. There is a high attendance of theatrical of students. It is a very well known school and is equipment with the most updated computers and equipment available. Plus their sports departments are all very competive.

The school is overdue for a major make-over. Even the walkways. The bathrooms are just gross. Classes are overcrowded.

I am very disappointed that communication from teachers to parents is virtually non existent. When I requested information regarding my Honors English students' performance in class, the teacher responded with, 'I have 180 students, I can't tell you how your child is doing. Ask your child.' Furthermore, I emailed the principal, Mr. Linzey, and have not received a response from him---my email explicitly requested a response. Educators gripe about not being viewed as true professionals, however they shirk one of their professional obligations, which is to communicate with parents re: student performance. HBHS has been a true disappointment from my standpoint as an involved parent.

I am a graduate and now parent of Huntington Beach High and can speak highly for their progams and teachers. My only problem was this school was so big, it is hard for some to find their way and niche. GATE and MUN programs were fantastic.

This school provides the HBUHSD Scholar with Distinction program which honors academic excellence for students meeting a defined rigorous Advanced Placement pathway. The Scholar program provides feedback to students and parents about progress each semester by a mailed to the home family copy of the transcript and plus an evaluation of the student progress toward the Scholar program. If you are a university bound student planning to enter a competitive university or impacted college major then the Scholar with Distinction educational plan is a must.

I just wrote an awesome review, but the thing said it was too long so I'll just cover basics and answer any questions anybody has. There are some amazing classes and programs and so many unique sports that it's hard not to be involved. But then some of these classes fill so quickly that people who are qualified, do not get to excell to thier full potential. Most of the teachers are more amazing than you could believe, such as Mr.Stickney, Mr.Anderson and Mr.Nichols, they all love thier subjects and teach with passion. The school is amazing, but it still has its little defects making a bit harder to enjoy it.

This school is excellent for Honors and AP students. The best advice I can give is to be sure that your child enrolls in Model United Nations. Consistently nationally ranked program.
